got a linksys wrt54g version 5 which i know is a crappy version but i cant do much on that. I noticed it has been running real slow and tested it finding out it was geting like .5mbs a second. So i reset it with no change. Then did a hard reset and finally got 3mb a sec. well then i unhooked the router and went direct to my mac and got 8mbs a sec speeds. So big dif but why and i got the latest firmware. Is their a different router i can get that wont be so much like the Linksys 54g.

Did you do a hard reset (Factory Defaults) or a soft reset? Do a hard reset, do a DNS flush and renew on your cable modem, and then plug in your router and see if theres any change.

DMM unfortunately those versions of the wrt are the worse. The best versions are far gone and for sale all over ebay. Do like I did .. install ddwrt and improve the OS, throughput and functionality.. I also wouldnt mess with an N or anything else other than Cisco :)

2 variations to the procedure.. 1 will work for you depending on your version..
Read the steps 2 times and go step by step when you perform them. Only idiots create bricks.

D link wireless N range booster is the shit

O duh i understood that but i meant the software required to put ddwrt onto your router. They are exe files..
