Ok, since I received help in the matter, I figured I would give back to the "community". This turtorial was made in about 20 minutes(not including the photoshoping) and is meant to be a basis for your modding needs. I once again will say, DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Lets begin with the tools that you will need. This is just what I use and it seems to work the best out of any other tools I have used. They are all available online, or from Radio Shack and Sears.
1 - Soldering iron - I use the 15 watt iron with fine tip from RS. I buy the tip and then turn it on and let it heat up and then unplug it and then repeat till full heat. Once fully hot, I coat it with solder and then turn it off and let the solder dry on it. Let it sit for a few minutes to fully harden and then you are ready to go.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/1.JPG
2 - Tweezers - nuff said
3 - Pin - some people file them down, but I don't.
4 - Torx screwdriver - I use the husky version available at your local home SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM for like 6 bux. (if you ask what a torx driver is, quit reading and goto Jeff's tutorial on how to take the phone apart)
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/6.JPG
5 - Solder - I use .022 diamter from radio shack.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/2.JPG
6 - Desoldering Braid - From rs also.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/3.JPG
7 - Solder weld - for beginners it works great. Its a paste that when heat is applied, it turns hard. Package says harder than regular solder.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/4.JPG
8 - Craftsman Liquid Rosin flux - Helps draw excess solder from the KP.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/7.JPG
9 - Soldering work station - Available for about 6 bux from rs and is a great tool. Holds your iron and also has a sponge to clean off the tip after solders.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/1.JPG
10 - Insulated wire - I use 30 gauge, some people use 37 gauge. For vents mods and putting leds where ever you want to put them.

Now to the fun part.
First turn the iron on and wet your sponge from the work station. I am using an old old i60 board for this that I learned on. So disregard the melted kp...lol
Ok, I dip my Q-Tip into the flux.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/8.JPG
Then I apply the flux to the led and resistor on the boards.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/9.JPG
Then I use the desoldering braid and lay it on the led.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/10.JPG
Then apply heat to the top of the braid, I lay it right on the braid, and soon the solder will start to pull from the led. This is the first part of removal.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/11.JPG
Next,
Get your pin and place it under the led.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/12.JPG
Heat up the leftover solder while prying the led up slightly. IMPORTANT: don't apply too much pressure or you will rip the solder points off of the board.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/13.JPG
Then switch to the other side and repeat until the led/resistor is free.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/14.JPG
Then you will have solder points visible and the led/resistor is gone.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/15.JPG
Once the led is free, I put flux on the solder points again and allow it to dry fully.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/16.JPG
Then I lay the desolder braid on top and pull the excess solder off.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/17.JPG
Your solder points should look like this.

NOW,
Grab your led with your tweezers and line it up where you want it to go.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/19.JPG
I use the tweezers in my left hand and the iron in my right, but since I don't have three hands I left out the tweezers in the pic and just layed the led on the board
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/20.JPG
Then apply heat with solder on your iron to each side
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/21.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/22.JPG
Let it dry completely before checkin the Led for light with the battery and thats all there is to it!!!!
If taking off your status light, just do it the same way as above as far as taking it off.

If you are wanting to add leds to the vents or Ptt/Home buttons, this is what I do. Same if you are adding dual status.
I always add solder to my iron and then lay the wire near the led and heat both up and remove heat source and waalaa.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/24.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/26.JPG
Lay your 30 gauge wire on the solder point that you wish to use and add solder from the iron to make the joint.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/23.JPG
Then I connect the wire to the other side of the led and solder it together.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/25.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/27.JPG
Lastly, solder the other wire to the solder point to complete the circuit and apply solder and you are all set.
http://home.comcast.net/~kheimbuch/solder/28.JPG
Use these diagrams to determine your correct side for solder and dual status diagram for that.

You are a SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMing god my friend. i think my iron is too hot though its butain and i have it on as low as possible but i keep ripping off the solder points

Either too hot or you are forcing them off too quick. 7 bux or so gets ya a 15 watt iron from radio shack and should do the trick. I also play around with putting a whole bunch of solder on my iron and cover the entire led. Then let it dry and then heat the "glob" up and then push slightly and it comes off that way too. Then use the braid to get the excess solder off.
Good luck man!

does it matter what size solder you use?
cuz on the radioshack website the closet one i saw was .032 diameter is that good?

ok. What about the screens i heard u cna put leds under the screens to change the colors, the i60 is easy but the i90 has to be done custom?

Yeah....I think. I need to take it apart tonight and see how the leds are laid out. I wonder if the disco lights emit the blue leds or if it is another set of leds.

are the LED's for the CID screen a different size LED because the LED thats there is bigger
Jimbo
07-11-2004, 02:03 PM
they are 0603 profile SMT LEDs
they are 0603 profile SMT LEDs
so are the resistors the 681 or 301's. Also cant you take the flashing chips off of like the ribbons of led inserts to do the flashing in like the flip area??
Thanks so much also
Jimbo
07-12-2004, 02:25 AM
resistors are 681. i would imagine u would be able to use the rf chip to do a flip mod

first off where can i get some flux rs doesn't have none. can u explain how the whole resistor thing works and wheredo they go and why do u need them. i know everything else. thanks

07-27-2004, 12:51 AM
You can buy flux from RS online, resistors are needed for the blank spots if you add leds, there is a diagram on the first page on where they go.
cuz123
07-27-2004, 01:04 AM
so when u remove a led thats already there u don't need a resistor???
NDredsox
07-27-2004, 01:11 AM
As long as you don't remove the resistor also, it will still be there. No need for another one.

i found it a little rough as well, i suggest a captain and coke, and then get to it.
Seriously though, my suggestion would be, just take your time, and dont crease it. good luck
