First Vioxx. Then Bextra and Celebrex. Now yet another pain reliever, Aleve, a brand of naproxen, has been linked to heart attacks and strokes, and unlike the other three, it's available without a prescription.
The National Institutes of Health announced Monday that an Alzheimer's prevention trial found that, compared with people taking a placebo, those on Aleve had a 50% greater risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Those taking Celebrex had no increased risk, but just last week Celebrex was linked to higher heart risk in another trial that was looking at colon polyp prevention.
That finding — added to a new warning placed on Bextra's label cautioning against use by heart bypass surgery patients and Vioxx's withdrawal from the market Sept. 30 because of safety concerns — raises the specter that no non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, may be safe enough.
Medical reporter Rita Rubin asked doctors and researchers for their take.
